Building Department
The Building Department receives and processes applications for building alterations and renovations, new buildings, pools, signs, entrances and septic systems for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional building. Building permit regulations and fees are set out in By-law No. 2005-51, as amended.
When do I need a Building Permit?
- New Building (residential, commercial, industrial and institutional)
- Building alterations and renovations (almost always, including decks)
- Pools (deeper than 24 inches)
- Fences (only when fencing an existing or new pool)
- Signs (all signs require a permit)
- Entrances (all new entrances to be constructed onto a municipal roadway require a permit)
- Septic Systems (new and modified)
Building Permit Applications
New Regulations Under the Ontario Building Code
On May 19, 2005, O. Reg. 236/05 was filed amending the Building Code to extend the implementation period of the building regulatory changes from July 1, 2005 to January 1, 2006 for certain key elements, specifically:
- The qualification requirements for building officials and designers;
- The registration requirements (i.e. qualified staff and insurance) for designers;
- The timeframes for the review of building permit applications by municipalities; and
- The commencement of the first reporting period for the annual building permit fee report to be prepared by municipalities
