You must be at least 18 years of age to be married in Ontario by licence or under the authority of the publication of banns without authorization or parental consent.

Any couples wanting to be married in the Province of Ontario require a valid marriage licence. If you are a Midland resident you can make an appointment to submit a completed application and purchase your licence at Town Hall.
A marriage licence is valid in Ontario for a period of three months from the date of issue. The Town does not conduct civil marriage ceremonies.

How to Apply
Marriage licences can only be issue to the applicant and/or joint applicant. It takes approximately 15 minutes to process the marriage licence, and the applicant and/or joint applicant must be present while it is being processed. If only one applicant can attend, you must provide the other applicant's original identification.
Download and completed the Ministry's Marriage Licence Application Form, then make an appointment to bring the completed application to Town Hall, 575 Dominion Avenue, for processing. Please call 705-526-4275 ext. 2212 during office hours (8:30am–4:30pm, Monday to Friday) to make your appointment. Please note applications will not be processed after 4pm.
Application Requirements
In order to process your application, please note:
Both parties must sign and date the Marriage Licence Application form.
Original identification for both applicants is required. Two (2) pieces of identification must be shown for each party confirming name, birth date and signature.
First piece of identification must be one of the following:
- Birth Certificate
- Current Passport with photo
- Record of Immigrant Landing
- Canadian Citizenship Card
Second piece of identification must be photo identification, which can be one of the following:
- Driver’s Licence
- Ontario Health Card with photo
- Current Passport with photo (provided it is not used as the first piece of identification)
- Ontario Photo ID Card
Requirements for Divorced or Widowed Applicants
If you are divorced, we require:
- the Original Judgment or Certificate of Divorce or Decree Absolute or a Certified Copy of same by the Court which granted the divorce.
- An uncertified copy is not acceptable.
- Also, a Divorce Order is not acceptable (as it is not the final document).
- For divorces outside of Canada, please refer to the Authorization Section on the Requirements Respecting Marriage in Ontario form which is attached.
If you are widowed:
- A Death Certificate is not required for widowed applicants.
