Recreational backyard fires are allowed in Midland provided the resident first purchases an Open-Air Burn Permit and follows the Open-Air Burning By-law.

The cost of an Open-Air Burning Permit is $42. Permits are valid from the date of purchase until December 31 of that given year. Permits must be visible from the road when you have a backyard fire.

Always confirm the current fire danger rating before burning.

How to Apply

Only the property owner or agent shall apply for a fire permit. Open Air Burn Permits will only be issued to property owners. If the resident is not the property owner, a written authorization from the property owner is required. Tenants can bring in a signed letter or complete the Property Owner Permission to Burn form.

Downloaded applications can be completed and submitted by:

  • emailing the completed application form and Property Owner Permission to Burn Form (if required) to service@midland.ca. Customer Service staff will call you for your credit card information. Please do not include credit card information in the email.
  • visiting Town Hall in person at 575 Dominion Avenue (open Monday to Friday, 8:30am–4:30pm). Cash, debit or credit payments are accepted in person.
