National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People “Red Dress Day” May 5, 2025
Whereas; Canada launched the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls at the request of Indigenous families, organizations, and Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission; and
Whereas; May 5, 2025, marks the National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People in Canada, also known as “Red Dress Day,”
Whereas; the Town of Midland recognizes the importance of honoring and remembering the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) within our community and across Canada;
Whereas; the symbol of the red dress has been adopted as a powerful reminder of the missing and murdered, symbolizing the loss and resilience of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people;
Whereas; it is essential to raise awareness, advocate for justice, and take action to address the root causes of violence against Indigenous peoples.
Therefore, I proclaim May 5, 2025, as a National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People in Midland and that flags at the Midland Municipal Office be lowered in acknowledgement of same.
