Midland lowers flags for National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S (Red Dress Day)

Flags at the Midland Municipal Office are lowered in acknowledgement of National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People. Mayor Bill Gordon has proclaimed May 5, 2026, as a National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People in Midland:

Whereas; Canada launched the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls at the request of Indigenous families, organizations, and Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission; and

Whereas; May 5, 2025, marks the National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People in Canada, also known as “Red Dress Day”; and

Whereas; the Town of Midland recognizes the importance of honouring and remembering the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) within our community and across Canada; and

Whereas; the symbol of the red dress has been adopted as a powerful reminder of the missing and murdered, symbolizing the loss and resilience of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people; and

Whereas; it is essential to raise awareness, advocate for justice, and take action to address the root causes of violence against Indigenous peoples.

Therefore, I, Mayor Bill Gordon, proclaim May 5, 2026, as a National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People in Midland and that flags at the Midland Municipal Office be lowered in acknowledgement of same.
