Town invites residents to get winter ready at Winter Operations Open House

With winter just around the corner, the Town of Midland invites residents to attend the annual Winter Operations Open House on Thursday, November 5, to learn how municipal crews prepare for and respond to winter weather conditions.

Each winter, Town crews maintain 270 lane kilometres of roads and 105 kilometres of sidewalks. The open house is an opportunity to speak directly with Operations staff, learn about the Town's maintenance standards, and get answers to questions about how roads and sidewalks are maintained across the community.

“Our Operations team works day and night through the winter to keep Midland's roads and sidewalks safe,” said Thayer O'Neill, Manager of Operations. “The open house is a chance for residents to talk with the people behind the plows, see how we prioritize routes during a storm, and learn how they can help keep the community moving.”

Service Reminders

  • Maintenance Standards: Priority routes, including emergency routes, school zones and business areas, are cleared first, followed by residential streets. Crews work to meet Provincial Minimum Maintenance Standards (MMS).
  • Driveways: The Town does not clear the snow left at the end of driveways by plows. Windrows can be frustrating for residents, but windrows cannot be avoided when effectively plowing the road.
  • Plow Tracker: The Plow Tracker shows approximately when roads and sidewalks in your neighbourhood were last plowed, sanded or salted, and includes each road's service level.
  • Overnight Parking: Winter overnight parking restrictions are in effect annually from November 15 to April 1. Parking is not permitted on Town streets or in municipal lots from 12 a.m. to 7 a.m.
