Pool & Deck Permits

A building permit is required for any fence that encloses a private outdoor pool.

A private outdoor pool is any man made body of water on private property where the depth can exceed 0.6 metres (24 inches).  To ensure the safety of the public, a pool cannot be constructed and filled with water without a fence installed as per Swimming pool fencing By-law

If you are placing a hot tub on a deck, a permit with engineered drawings for the deck will be required.

A detailed site plan must include the following

  • Lot lines, lot dimensions and lot area
  • All existing and proposed buildings on the lot
  • The proposed pool dimensions and location
  • Proposed pool setbacks from the property lines
  • The location of pool equipment (heat pump and filter) and distances from lot lines to the equipment
  • The location, height, and material (wrought iron, wood and/or chain link) of proposed fence
  • The location, height and type (self-closing or latching) of lockable gates
  • For inground pools a lot grading plan will also be required
