The flags were lowered in observance of Indigenous Veterans Day at 10:30am today, November 8. Mayor Bill Gordon has proclaimed November 8, 2025, as “Indigenous Veterans Day” in the Town of Midland:

Whereas, The Town of Midland recognizes that it is located on land which is the traditional and Treaty territory of the Anishinabek people, now known as the Chippewa Tri-Council comprised of Beausoleil First Nation, Rama First Nation, and the Georgina Island First Nation. This territory is within the pre-confederation Treaty 5 and Treaty 16 and included within the Williams Treaties of 1923. The Town of Midland recognizes that it is located on land which is the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat and the historic Homelands of the Metis, and that our Town is home to a large and diverse community of Indigenous peoples; and

Whereas, Indigenous Veterans Day is a day of remembrance that honours the contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people who participated in and continue to serve in Canada’s military efforts; and

Whereas, Indigenous Peoples have fought on the front line of every major battle Canada has been involved in and have done so with valour and distinction; and

Whereas, this day serves to educate on the inequitable veteran benefits and rights of returning Indigenous service people, it was not until 1995 that Indigenous Peoples were allowed to lay Remembrance Day wreaths at the National War Memorial; and

Whereas, the Canadian Army’s Defence Team Champion for Indigenous Peoples continue to work with Indigenous Soldiers and civilians to support reconciliation and understand the collective history; and

Whereas, the Town of Midland stands with Canada in honouring the Indigenous veterans within the community and beyond; and

Whereas, the Town of Midland acknowledges the bravery, courage and sacrifices of all veterans who fought for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. We continue to honour Indigenous veterans while committing ourselves to having a greater respect and appreciation for their service.

Therefore, I, Mayor Bill Gordon on behalf of the Town of Midland, do hereby proclaim November 8, 2025, as “Indigenous Veterans Day” in the Town of Midland.
