Accessibility in the Town of Midland

Midland is committed to providing a barrier free community for our residents and visitors in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Accessibility guidelines are incorporated into the design of all Town infrastructure to ensure we meet or exceed the AODA design standards to improve accessibility and safety for all.

To contact the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility for information on accessibility legislation, email accessibility@ontario.ca.

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)

In 2005, the Province introduced The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act to create mandatory accessibility standards for both public and private businesses and organizations were established. The objective of the regulatory standards is to make Ontario fully accessible in the areas of:

  • Customer services
  • Transportation
  • Information and Communications
  • Employment; and
  • Design of public spaces.

The Town supports the Province's efforts to achieve a universally accessible Ontario by 2025.

 Accessible Customer Service

The Accessible Customer Service Standard mandates all businesses and organizations to establish policies, practices and procedures that govern the provision of goods or services to persons with disabilities.

The Town's Accessible Customer Service Standard Policy is aimed at ensuring services provided to those with disabilities is delivered in a manner that promotes independence, dignity, integration and equal opportunity.

The Policy provides an overview of the process in place for receiving feedback on the accessibility of its goods and services. Upon request, the Town will provide accessible formats and communication supports when receiving and responding to feedback.

Accessible customer service training is ongoing and continues to be provided to all new employees, volunteers and members of Council during their orientation.

 Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation

The Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation  information and communications, employment and transportation

As required under the Regulation, the Town of Midland established an Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation Policy that reaffirms the Town's commitment to universal accessibility and outlines what measures the Town intends to undertake to ensure compliance with the legislated requirements.

A Multi-Year Accessibility and Transit Plan was developed as mandated under the IASR and works in conjunction with the policy. The Plan provides a complete overview of the accessible standards applicable to the Town and the corporate strategies to be undertaken to guarantee fulfillment of the requirements by the timelines stipulated within the legislation.

Both the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation policy and Multi-Year Accessibility Plan are living documents and are updated as required to reflect the Town's current practices.

The Town's Accessibility Advisory Committee

(Update October 2023) The Town of Midland has now become part of the Simcoe County Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee.  The Committee is comprised of the following municipalities: Township of Springwater, the Township of Tay, the Township of Oro-Medonte and the Township of Adjala-Tosorontio, in accordance with Ontarians with Disabilities Act 2001, and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (“Acts”), and shall act as an advisory body in accordance with both Acts and all related standards.

For more information please see the Boards and Committees page.
