Proclamation
"Indigenous Heritage Month” and “Indigenous Peoples Day”
June 21, 2025
Whereas; June is National Indigenous History Month and June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day – a day for all Canadians to learn about and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples; and
Whereas; The Town of Midland recognizes the inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples as the original inhabitants of the land known as Midland – the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg people, including the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Pottawatomi Nations collectively known as the Three Fires Confederacy, as well as the Wendat Nation (Huron) who occupied these lands prior to the middle of the 17th century; and
Whereas; The Town of Midland seeks to strengthen the relationship with Indigenous communities and local organizations, and is committed to working towards reconciliation to address the Calls to Action from the Truth & Reconciliation Commission of Canada; and
Whereas; The Town of Midland strives to be an inclusive community and encourages all residents to reflect, learn, create long-term systematic changes and take action in a meaningful way towards reconciliation in solidarity with the Indigenous community.
Therefore, I, Bill Gordon, Mayor, do hereby proclaim the month of June 2025 as “Indigenous Heritage Month” and June 21, 2025, as “Indigenous Peoples Day”.
