Midland unveils new street signs within Historic Dollartown
For Immediate Release
(September 24, 2025 – Midland, ON) The Town of Midland unveiled the first of 77 newly designed street signs that will be installed within the historic community of Dollartown. The new street signs play homage to the history of the Dollartown community, with the new signage set to be installed at every intersection within Dollartown’s boundaries.
The Historic Dollartown Street sign project was launched in 2015 by the Midland Heritage Committee to celebrate and preserve the legacy of one of our historic communities. Now in 2025, this important community led initiative is coming to life bringing history into the present and highlighting a unique part of Midland’s heritage.
“The unveiling of the Historic Dollartown street signs is a proud moment for our community. This project would not have been possible without the dedication of the Midland Heritage Committee, the support of Town Council, and the hard work of staff,” said Chair of Midland Heritage Committee Rene Hackstetter. “Recognizing historic spaces like Dollartown helps us preserve our shared heritage and reinforces the importance of remembering the people and places that shaped Midland into the town it is today.”
Dollartown was once a thriving settlement just outside Midland’s original borders in Tay Township. Named after the Dollar family, who arrived from Bracebridge in 1875 and quickly made their mark by founding the Ontario Lumber Company (OLC) on the shores of Midland Bay, Dollartown attracted families and industry to the region. In 1913, the community was officially absorbed into Midland, but its legacy continues to live on through the stories, landmarks, and now, the newly unveiled street signs that honour its place in local history.
