Active Transportation

Active Transportation means using your own power like walking, biking, or rolling to get around. The Town of Midland is committed to improving active transportation through better cycling facilities, trails, and transit options.

Why Choose Active Transportation?

Choosing to walk, bike, or roll more often helps to:

  • Reduce traffic by putting fewer cars on the road.
  • Cut emissions and support a cleaner, greener community.
  • Boost health through daily physical activity.

Staying Safe

By following a few simple rules and practicing safe habits, we can help create a road network that is comfortable, predictable, and safe for all users.

Rules of the Road

  • Follow all traffic signs, signals, and road markings.
  • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections.
  • Use designated bike lanes or shared-use paths when available.
  • Travel in the correct direction of traffic.
  • Signal your turns and lane changes clearly.
  • Give plenty of space when passing others.

Safety Tips

  • Stay alert and avoid distractions like phones or headphones.
  • Wear visible or reflective clothing, especially at night.
  • Use lights and proper safety gear when cycling or rolling.
  • Make eye contact with drivers when crossing streets.
  • Choose safe, well-lit routes whenever possible.
  • Be extra cautious in poor weather conditions.

Students can get involved through On the Move, a school travel initiative that encourages kids to be more active. Led by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, it provides tools for parents and teachers in partnership with local schools, boards, and communities.
