Everyone has a role in making our roads safe. The Town maintains the traffic signals, pedestrian signals and pedestrian crossovers to keep traffic flowing.

Pedestrian Crossings

Pedestrian crossings provide safety for those crossing the road. They lessen the severity and frequency of collisions. Drivers are required by law to stop for pedestrians crossing.

What is the difference between a crosswalk and a crossover?
  • A crosswalk is found at an intersection with traffic signals, pedestrian signals or stop signs.
  • A pedestrian crossover is a crossing that can have specific signs, pavement markings or lights.
What are tips for pedestrians crossing?
  • If there is a push button for lights, press it to turn on the flashing lights before crossing,
  • Make it clear that you want to cross the road, make eye contact with drivers and cyclists so they see you,
  • Make sure drivers and cyclists have enough time to stop, and have fully stopped, before you start to cross
What do I do at a crossing as a driver or cyclist?
  • Watch for pedestrians waiting to cross the road and make eye contact,
  • Stop for pedestrians at the yield line of white triangles,
  • Allow pedestrians to clear the entire roadway before proceeding to drive through (note that intersections with, crossing guards require motorists and cyclists to wait until all pedestrians and the crossing guard have cleared the entire roadway before driving through),
  • Do not pass other vehicles within 30 meters of the crossover,
  • Cyclists who wish to use the crossover to cross the roadway must dismount and walk their bike.
Where can I find more information on Pedestrian Crossings?

Traffic Calming

The Town of Midland is responsible for ensuring roadways serve the needs of all users such as cars, transit, pedestrians including those with accessibility needs, cyclists, emergency vehicles and snow removal equipment.

What is the purpose of Traffic Calming?

Traffic calming is intended to improve the quality of life for residents on traffic calmed streets, achieve slower speeds for motor vehicles, and increase the safety for non-motorized users of the street.

What are Traffic Calming Measures?

The Town uses a variety of traffic calming measures to reduce dangerous driving and allow residents to enjoy their neighbourhoods.

This includes:

  • On street parking.
  • Speed cushions.
  • Raised intersections.
  • Textured crosswalks.
Is there a policy in place for Traffic Calming?

In the fall of 2021, the Town adopted a traffic calming guide and policy which outlines the steps to take to start the process of obtaining traffic calming measures.

You can read our Traffic Calming Policy and Procedure for full information.

Can I request Traffic Calming in my neighbourhood?

To request a traffic calming assessment, please read our full Traffic Calming Policy and Procedure before submitting your request. Once you have read and understood the procedure, you can complete a Traffic Calming Assessment Form.

Traffic Monitoring

If you've been driving around the Town of Midland, you may have seen our Traffic Monitoring Trailer and pole mounted signs. The Town of Midland Engineering Department monitors traffic speeds on the town roads.

What does the Traffic Monitoring do?
  • Compile traffic speed and volume numbers.
  • Raise speed awareness
  • Help provide traffic calming.
Where do you monitor the traffic speeds?

The Traffic Monitoring Trailer and signs will be stationed at known hot spots as well as school zones. If you have any areas of concern that you think needs traffic calming, please let us know.

Why does the town monitor traffic speed?

The data from the trailer and signs will be used to help generate awareness campaigns, identify the need for more signage, traffic calming measures and possibly speed limit reductions.

Speed Trailer Reports

These reports are an in-depth review of street locations where the mobile speed trailer and signs have been placed, including graphs and charts comparing volumes, speeds, and times.
