Public Art
Call for Artists
The Town of Midland commissions public art throughout the year to create a visually rich community and foster local pride. Submissions are evaluated based on the Town’s Public Art Policy, including:
- Suitability for public display
- Responds to or complements the installation location
- Reflection of Midland’s history, culture, or natural environment
- Ability to build appreciation for public art
- Originality and creativity
- Artistic merit and experience of the artist or team
Proposals must be inclusive and diverse, and must respect the rights of Indigenous people to own and control their cultural heritage including designs, stories, and other traditional expressions. Artists are also encouraged to carefully review the specific submission requirements and deadlines for each project to ensure eligibility and alignment.

Questions and answers regarding current call for artists:
- RE: Dry cleaners mural - The mural is to be recreated on panels in the artist's studio space, is insurance required for this? Insurance is required during the transportation of the finished artwork from the artist’s studio until it is delivered to the Town.
- RE: Dry cleaners mural - There is a vent on the building, photos attached. Is this a working vent and should the mural panels be cut out to leave it accessible? Yes, this will need to be left accessible.
- RE: Return of Trumpeter Swans - Will the 4 goose neck lights be removed from the mural prior to repainting? If not will more than just the steel plate installed on the mural need to be painted? No, the lights will remain installed. Just the plate is to be painted.
- RE: Return of Trumpeter Swans - Does the Town still want the banner and words within the mural as it was in the original mural "Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre - The Returner of the Trumpeter Swans". We would like to have the wording from the banner incorporated somewhere on the finished mural, however, it does not need to be large and it does not need to be in the shape or style that it is on the existing mural.
2024–2025 Mural Restoration Project
The Town of Midland, with support from the Rural Economic Development program, restored sixteen of the murals within the downtown area. Eight murals were restored in 2024, and an additional eight murals in 2025. Some examples of the restoration work are below.
