The Community Safety Speed Camera program starts September 2, 2025.
Automated Speed Enforcement in Midland
Midland's Community Safety Speed Camera program uses Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) to help reduce speeding around schools and in Community Safety Zones.
Midland's Community Safety Speed Camera locations
There are two community safety speed cameras in Midland running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
-
William Street - Community Safety Zone in front of Sacred Heart Catholic School
-
Yonge Street - Community Safety Zone in front of Mundy's Bay Public School
How it works
The program (ASE) uses a camera and speed sensor to detect the speed of travelling vehicles. When a safety speed camera detects a speeding, an image is captured and provided to the Processing Centre. The image is reviewed by a Provincial Offences Officer and the Penalty Order issued.
The Penalty Order will be issued to the owner of the vehicle and will include a digital image of the vehicle and license plate.
The Penalty Order will be mailed to the registered owner on confirmation of the contravention by the Provincial Offences Officer. The Penalty Order includes a fine, however, it does not affect the vehicle owner's driving record, Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration, or insurance. No demerit points are applied.
What to do if you receive a Penalty Order
The Penalty Order will provide details for two options:
Pay the penalty fine |
|
Request a dispute of the penalty |
An appeal option is allowed if you wish to dispute the Penalty Order. The Penalty Order provides full details of the Appeal process and how to proceed. To request an appeal, use one of the following methods:
Please note: If you do not request a dispute within 30 days, the Penalty Order will be confirmed, and you will be required to pay the fines set out in the Penalty Order. |
Fine Amounts
Fine amounts for automated speed enforcement are regulated by the Province just like speeding tickets issued by the police. There are 3 components that make up the total penalty:
-
The provincial set penalty. This is based on the number of kilometers over the speed limit that the vehicle was travelling when captured multiplied by the rate set out in O.Reg. 355/22. Please note: Fines are doubled in community safety zones, even if the violation occurred outside school hours. Open O.Reg 355/22 for the fee table.
-
The MTO search fee. This fee is charged by the Province for access to the name and address of the plate owner and is $8.25.
-
Victim’s Justice Fund Surcharge. Municipalities are required to collect and remit a Victim Surcharge fee to the Province to support programs they administer for victims of crime throughout Ontario. The amount of this charge is set by the Province and is dependent on the amount of the fine imposed. These fines are pursuant to O.Reg. 161/00 Victim Fine Surcharges. Open O.Reg 161/00 for the fee table.

Privacy Statement
The data collected by the ASE system is encrypted and securely stored. It is transferred through a cloud-based system to the Processing Centre, where only authorized Provincial Offences Officers can access it using dedicated image processing software. ASE is not a video-based system – only a still image of the motor vehicle and license plate is captured, not the driver. After the data is transferred, all information is erased from the original storage device.
